Doolin Garden & Nursey
A visit to the beautiful Garden of Matt O’Connell is a must for any Doolin visitor. Matt as a gardener is self-taught. He trained as a designer in the NCAD in Dublin and the Inchbald School of Design, London. This garden is designed to look very simple, moving around it, you begin to find “hidden” pathways leading to other sections or mini gardens. The main thrust is two long grass runways which meet at a focal point. These are traversed by stone and gravel pathways which lead in and out of other areas. To a certain extent, you could call them show gardens as most of the plants you see are for sale in my nursery. It’s good to be able to see mature plants of what you are buying. The garden surrounds an award winning house designed by Shelly McNamara of Grafton Architects (1995).
In 2016 Grafton Architects design of a university campus in Lima, Peru was named the world’s best new building by the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA), widely regarded as the most rigorously judged awards in the profession.

Like the house, the garden is fairly contemporary but has some traditonal hidden sections, such as a circular box hedged area planted with white lillies and roses planted over four arches. Favourites plants are Astrantias, Heucheras, Lysimachias, Euphorbias, Perovskia, Geraniums, Scabiosas, Sisyrinchiums, Daisies and now Roses (the latter I think is an age thing). The newest addition to the garden is an extensive selection of sculpture by talented sculptor Jerry Cahir.
At least 90% of the plants in the garden have been propagated and grown outdoors and are for sale. If they flourish in the harsh Doolin weather, what will they do in your garden?
Gardening groups and enthusiasts are most welcome to visit Doolin Garden and Nursery. To date, we have welcomed groups of all shapes and sizes from all over Ireland, Europe and the USA. Matt will give you a guided tour of the Garden where you are free to take photographs and ask questions drawing on his vast knowledge of plants. Advance booking required.
Garden Consultancy Service
Matt also offers a garden consultancy service offering advice on garden design and planting. This can vary from a single visit to guide the client into making the most of their existing garden to a full design service and provision of appropriate plants. During a two hour garden consultancy visit, Matt can advise you with the help of measurements and sketches to produce a plan which you can use to bring your new garden to life.

“Beautiful Natural Bouquets for our Wedding
As I was getting married in Doolin, I thought it would be a nice touch to get a local person to do the bridal party bouquets so I contacted Matthew at the Doolin Nursery. We had a quick sit down at the nursery a few months beforehand when I was down visiting the hotel to go over what I would like. I wanted a rustic and simple look. We didn’t meet up again until the morning of the wedding when the bouquets where getting picked up. They were lovely, just what I wanted. I got five bouquets for my bridesmaids and my own, as well as two large bouquets for our mothers. Everyone told us that they loved the flowers. The price was very reasonable. I would recommend anyone getting married in Doolin to give Matthew a call”
