Cliffs of Moher Cycle Challenge
Riverside Cycling Club Ennistymon is hosting their annual charity cycle for the 7th year running, starting and finishing in Ennistymon town on Saturday, 6th April 2019. The Cliffs of Moher Cycling Challenge is a leisure Charity Cycle along the beautiful Coast of north Clare taking in the Stunning Cliffs of Moher and Challenging Corkscrew Hill. Over the years the club has donated almost €30,000 to local charities which is a great achievement.
Due to it’s popularity, this years event is Limited to the first 1000 entries. Three distances are available 40KM, 80KM, and 125KM.
For all those who just want a small taste of the North Clare cycling routes, the first route, takes in the world famous Cliffs of Moher, Doolin (a refreshment stop at Doolin at 20km) and steers home via Lisdoonvarna the home of the matchmaking festival. (Distance 40km). All routes start together and split at Ballinalacken Castle after Doolin at 25km.
The second route takes in the scenic North Clare Wild Atlantic way incorporating the world famous Cliffs of Moher, Doolin, the beautiful Fanore, Black Head and the renowned Corkscrew Hill outside Ballyvaughan (a refreshment stop will be in Ballyvaughan town at The Wild Atlantic Lodge with some traditional Irish music while you relax). After that, it’s all downhill, home to Ennistymon (almost!) (Distance 80km).
The third route takes in all of the above 80km with the addition of a little detour out of Ballyvaughan, you will follow the road towards Galway meeting a climb after 11km at Ballaghdine, a few km later you will turn right up the Corker Hill (not to be confused with the corkscrew hill!) This is short but a testing climb with stunning views of the Burren & Galway Bay. The next 7km is a relatively flat cycle, until you commence the 6km climb to Carran village, with the first 3km the most difficult. Much needed refreshments will be waiting for you outside Cassidy’s Pub. (You earned it at this stage and need it for what lies ahead!), you will then have a scenic descent, down Ballyalban Hill, past the Aillwee Cave, when you will re-join the N67 at Newtown Castle Cross. From here you begin the climb of the infamous Corkscrew Hill. The entire climb, with its numerous switchbacks, is just 5km. From here you will have a nice steady and relaxing cycle to Ennistymon via Lisdoonvarna. (With a few short hills to finish!). (Distance 125km)
